Time to Listen

On 1st and 2nd October, inm / field notes and the Academy of Arts welcome you to the third part of the “Time to Listen” symposium on sustainability in contemporary music.Through open discussions, artistic interventions and performances, a communal meal and lectures spanning music, politics and science, this year's focus will be on sound-aesthetic approaches to the complex of issues surrounding climate (in)justice.

For the third part, the symposium will once again take place as an open space – a method for conferences and meetings that allows large groups to tackle complex issues in a self-organised process. For each individual session, participants of “Time to Listen” can contribute whatever topics they feel are important, as long as they fall under the umbrella of climate (in)justice and contemporary music. Symposium attendees are free to decide which sessions they would like to participate in (actively or passively).

Artists, activists and sustainability researchers are welcome to propose sessions that they would like to lead during the symposium on 1st or 2nd October. Each session will last one hour and can be in any format such as lecture, workshop, sound walk, listening session or guided improvisation. After the conference, a digital reader will be created from the selected contributions.

We are looking for contributions that deal with the topic of climate (in)justice through sound and music. As a starting point, we pose the following questions: What responsibility does art have with regard to sustainability, especially in a global context? How can we use sound to negotiate how we want to live together, and who belongs to this “we”? How can contemporary music be used to point out inequalities and raise awareness on the massive damage caused to natural and social systems? What considerations on climate ethics arise in curatorial work? What local responses do we have to global challenges? How do we empower music stakeholders who are geographically or socio-economically disadvantaged? What do sounds mean in our lives, and what can we learn from them? What knowledge and transformation potential lies in music and sound?

If you are interested, please send a short abstract (max. 1 page in English) on the content and format of your session, brief personal details and the technical requirements of the session (video, sound, etc.) via email to info@field-notes.berlin by 9th June 2024. A fee of €600 (gross) is provided for the guidance of the session during the conference and for the written processing for the conference reader. Travel and accommodation may also be covered. The selection of contributions will be made by a selection committee consisting of Amanda Gutierrez, Néstor F. Martínez, Tania Rubio and Sabine Vogel.
