I plan a piece for Zinc & Copper and myself, building on a recent series of compositions 'Murmurations' in extended just-intonation. For this piece I envision the wind trio plus two electric guitars with e-bows (played by me). The e-bows allow a range of one to six strings sounding simultaneously. The overtone spectrum and sound quality of the electric guitars can be altered with controls to approximate the overtones of brass instruments. With these resources in mind, I will focus on the voicing of the harmonies, as well as the different ways the harmony can sound when the timbre and overtone spectra are subtly altered.

My piece for Zinc and Copper features chord progressions tuned to the "13-Limit Just Intonation" system. The timing of the chords is determined by long rhythmic cycles and aims to create a sense of suspended time, with gaps filled by an electronic component triggered by a hexaphonic Just Intonation guitar. The guitar and brass interact dynamically, both in terms of rhythm and harmony - sometimes creating the sense of a unified sound, other times two distinct lines.

Zinc & Copper is an internationally recognised low brass ensemble founded in 2005 by Robin Hayward, working together with Elena Kakaliagou and Hilary Jeffery since 2014. Through an intensive exploration of microtonal and natural tunings, Zinc & Copper have developed a unique ensemble sound characterized by the warmth of low brass instruments and a wide range of extended playing techniques.
