Listening to Charles Ives’s First Piano Sonata can feel a little bit like walking through a foreign city without a map, says Tamara Stefanovich—you hear a few bars of church music, a marching band, or a ragtime tune wafting from an open window. The Berlin-based pianist, who thrilled Pierre Boulez Saal audiences in a piano duo with Pierre-Laurent Aimard last season, combines Ives’s rarely heard work with compositions by Bach, Scarlatti, and Bartók.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach »Sonata in G minor WQ 65.17 H47«
    Domenico Scarlatti »Sonata in G minor K 8«
Antonio Soler »Sonata in C minor No. 100«
Hanns Eisler »Piano Sonata Op. 1«
    Domenico Scarlatti »Sonata in C minor K 158«
Béla Bartók »Piano Sonata Sz 80«
Charles Ives »Piano Sonata No. 1«
