The exhibition opening features the first public presentation of new sound installations created by ten artists from South Africa and Germany. The outcome of a two-year process involving artist residencies, workshops and an ongoing programme of exchange across two continents, the installations use sound to express a nuanced view of current issues in South Africa.
Some installations are launched with artists’ performances at the opening event. Others involve the audience, who are invited to interact or are given the opportunity to create their own works. The sounds from a further series of immersive installations, 30 minutes each, are scheduled to be heard at specific times. One of the distinctive features of the exhibition is a silent disco headphone system that creates an intimate listening experience and allows visitors to move freely through the space. Five colour-coded stations use this system, and headphones are provided at the entrance to the exhibition. Please expect some waits on the headphones at the opening.
Robert Machiri, aka ChiMurenga, is DJ in the studio foyer from 9 pm, making sensitive and lively forays through historically-charged collections of records and sounds. Machiri, who has been living in Berlin since 2021, is known for the project “Listening at Pungwe”, which he realised together with Memory Biwa.
