On Friday, April 24 Liebig12 is proud to present a listening session of the new album Annihilating Grace of Infinity by Berlin-based Leiche (aka Marco Donnarumma) released by the Holotone imprint. The session is hosted by artist Margherita Pevere who will engage in conversation with Leiche and the audience to delve into the making of the album.
Doors open: 19:30
Start: 20:00
Elegiac sub rustlings, empty vastnesses of distortion, a thick fog of spectral shimmings, waves crashing against the ocean shores of a dark place. Annihilating Grace of Infinity is as much a deep and divergent musical journey as a cartography of a desolated and still vital interior landscape. There is a certain lightness and brightness emerging differently across the tracks on offer, while, at the same time, all is all anchored by an inexorable gravity towards a dark core, a centre of unabashed annihilation. This unresolved tension marches the listener through the experience.
The electric bass guitar, the only musical instrument used across the album, is augmented here with a feedback system of a few pedals and a mixer. The music is entirely played and recorded live, with a few samples added in post production. The combination of a range of alternative tunings with unorthodox use of distortion, reverberations and spatialization brings to light a variety of tonal and harmonic characteristics, expanding the bass guitar into extreme and unstable ranges. The conceptual destruction and reconstitution at the core of the album is thus transformed into a material approach to the instrument.
Artists biographies
Leiche - meaning 'corpse' in German - is a new solo project by Marco Donnarumma - sound artist, performer and theorist, as well as one half of the bass music duo Dadub with Daniele Antezza. Some core aspects of Donnarumma's signature sound for performances and installations - its viscerality, rawness and spatial depth - can be found in the work of Leiche too. But, in contrast to Donnarumma's sound work in contemporary art, Leiche is a purposeful exploration of the creative unbalance between harmony and distortion, song and soundscape, notes and noise.
Known internationally for her otherworldly work with living matter, ecology and biotechnology, Margherita Pevere is an artist and researcher addressing taboos like death, sex and vulnerability. Her work extends beyond the arts through high-profile art and science collaborations across academia and society. She is also the founder and curator of the series of events Krude Kunst and a co-founder of the performance group Fronte Vacuo.
