Yasmine Azaiez – violin
Patrick Crossland – trombone
Michel Doneda – saxophone
Alexander Frangenheim – double bass
Roger Turner – percussion
Andreas Voccia – modular synthesizer
For this concert, double bassist Alexander Frangenheim invites five musicians from the international scene of free improvisation. The openness of the musical material of the participants and their willingness to take risks are the unifying element in this project. With vitality, provocation and transparency, the individual musical languages are to merge into a process of common interaction. – The "roughness of thought" shaped in a common moment.
The musicians play in a sextet formation as well as in various sub-formations.
With Michel Doneda and Roger Turner, two internationally renowned players have been invited, with whom Frangenheim has a long and intensive collaboration. Roger Turner with his entire biography stands for the opening up of percussion into the smallest details, which he constantly continues, breaks and redesigns in a flow. Michel Doneda, on soprano and sopranino, creates a powerful, often raw web of sound with a wide range of new saxophone techniques.
Two musicians who walk between worlds are Patrick Crossland and Yasmine Azaiez. Crossland, who teaches at the University of Maryland and elsewhere, is best known in Germany and Berlin as a new music soloist (invitations to the Kammerensemble Neue Musik, member of the Composers Slide Quartet and Ensemble Laboratorium). The British musician Azaiez was admitted to the Yehudi Menuhin School at the age of eight and subsequently studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She received several international awards in the field of classical music. Her solo CD and collaboration with pianist Agusti Fernandez identify her as an outstanding voice of free improvisation.
Andreas Voccia, originally a studied jazz guitarist, focuses on the modular synthesizer and, influenced by compositional practices of new music, formulates precise and always clearly defined musical structures. Alexander Frangenheim, whose longstanding collaborations include the trombonist and cellist Günter Christmann, pursues the idea of dramaturgically guided free improvisation in his work. He has initiated numerous projects, and his festival label concepts of doing has now been in existence for 30 years.
