Over The Edge Club

Artificial intelligence is a poor cook. The recipe for watermelon cookies was created on the basis of a neural network that could learn from millions of recipes, but the sugar bombs still failed to convince the tasters. Fueled by a new phase of euphoria, however, AI is being trusted with more and more tasks beyond the classic fields.
After the Deep Blue software beat Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997, it slowly became clear that competition in logical games between humans and machines made as much sense as a race against a moving train.
The first chatbot to allegedly solve the Turing Test in 2001 pretended to be a 13-year-old Ukrainian boy named EUGENE GOOSTMAN. However, if you read the transcripts of the interviews, you wonder how the examiners came to their conclusion. And what Ukrainian boy should be called Eugene Goostman?
We let these and other figures come together as synthetically generated voices in OVER THE EDGE CLUB. A superintelligence dreams of these obsolete predecessors. The passages of the piece are based on the human sleep phases: Falling asleep, light sleep, recurrent Rapid Eye Movement phases, norm sleep, deep sleep and finally waking up. In each phase, certain brain waves are particularly active - these frequencies and durations appear again and again in the piece.
Using this as a starting point, we had the software create GPT-3 texts - some of them seemed almost round, but still a bit bland. And sometimes there was something like a poetic logical shift in them.
We couldn't resist bringing KIKU and ELIZA into a dialogue, giving the output of one to the other as input. Then there are AI-created faces that look confusingly like real ones, but: these persons do not exist. They were created by neural networks and are used, for example, in fake social media profiles.

Aus ferner Zukunft schaut das Musiktheater von gamut inc durch die Augen einer Superintelligenz. Sie träumt einen Deep Dream von ihren Vorgängern, die irgendwo in ihrem Gencode gespeichert sind.
