Federico Pozzer

Breath II

Federico Pozzer (piano) & Lucio Tasca (guitar) perform Breath II (2017), a work in which the three cycles of breath (inhalation, pause, exhalation) act as a time regulator.

"Each musician plays a single gesture with each inhalation, exhalation, and pause between. The piece is structured, with repeats and an emphasis on ninth intervals that makes the opening resemble the start of Schoenberg’s Opus 11. Each musician, however, plays independently and the sonic palette soon expands into percussive and frictional sounds. Time slows down. The music ebbs and flows intriguingly, a variegated mosaic of sounds that seems larger than the two instruments. " (Ben Harper, Boring Like a Drill)

FEDERICO POZZER is a composer and musician. His practice explores how changes in the players’ breathing can shape timings and interactions and how changes in the players’ breath can be questioned through composition and performance. In May 2019 his recording of Breaths was released by Another Timbre. His pieces have been performed recently at the 21st Century Guitar Conference 2021, Splendor (Amsterdam), Constellation (Chicago), and Deep Minimalism Festival 2.0 (London). (www.federicopozzer.com)

LUCIO TASCA is a composer and guitarist whose music focuses on "micro-differences," namely contingent oscillations, imperfections, and cracks that occur within the execution of the musical material. These micro-differences have the potential to act as a form of spontaneous microscopic emergent ornamentation and to draw attention to the touch of the performer. His recent pieces have been performed by Francesco Dillon, Ensemble Impronta, Christopher Redgate, Dejana Sekulic, OHHe Supercluster, Philip Thomas, and Kathryn Williams. (www.luciotasca.org)
