BerlinBesenBallett

Eine Performance im öffentlichen Raum von katrinem

During a three-week residency in Tehran in 2015, the broom entered my consciousness as the sounding instrument of a city. Early in the morning, I woke up to the neighbor sweeping the path: swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, short, short, short, short swing, swing, swing, swing, short, short, short, short, short. In between a back and forth, that was the rhythm. Six months later, I experienced something similar in Mexico City: swing, swing, short, short, swing, swing, swing, short, short swing, swing, swing, short, short, short, short, short, short, short, short, short. A completely different rhythm and much stronger than in Tehran. Since Tehran and Mexico City, I often pause when I hear someone sweeping - What does this broom sound like, can I recognize a sweeping pattern? There are many different types of brooms and sweeping techniques. If it sounds good and a nice sweeping pattern can be heard, the broom fits the player

BesenBallett is a choreographed composition by the sound artist katrinem.
The brooms used in everyday life have, in addition to their different shapes and materiality, different purposes. Each "broom-type" has its own sound and handling. In the BesenBallett they become instruments with a unique sound language and playing technique.

The BerlinBesenBallett will perform on Saturday, September 4, 2021, between 1 and 8 p.m. the paths, pavements, courtyards, and colonnades on the Museum Island.

We invite active participation. No previous knowledge is required! A BesenCasting will take place directly on site. You will choose a broom instrument and get an introduction to the KEHRPARTITUR. Together, the KEHRPARTITUR and choreographed variations are then played. Drop by between 1 and 8 p.m.! Do not forget your FFP2 mask!!

BerlinBesenBallett is designed as a social sculpture. As such, it creates new dialogues with its urban everyday spaces for both performers and listeners in a shared experience. Urban ground is mostly stone or asphalt. Action sites/play locations - where sweeping takes place - emphasize and amplify the sweeping sounds taking place in them through their architectural form and surface. Another aspect to the sound is the ambient noise. With different ensemble sizes and scores, the richness of variation of urban sites is taken into account. Thereby urban space is experienced actionistically and auditorily - as a dynamic living space.

Brooms are everyday objects disappearing more and more in public spaces in our highly technological western world. Brooms are tools that help us adapt our living environments to changing conditions and create or maintain certain functionalities.
Unfortunately, they are being replaced by motorized tools without a closer look at the interrelationships that go along with them. This raises ecological, social, economic, and political questions.
From an artistic point of view, they produce actions that display their quality in the rhythm and sound of their execution; they are dance and music simultaneously.
