Klanginstallation mit Musik-Performance

Can fiction immortalize real places? A music performance with embedded sound installation asks this question and turns a Neukölln graveyard into the star of the night.

Steeped in history, the Neuer St. Jacobi Friedhof and its silent inhabitants interweave famous texts of literature and philosophy. The grave of Bruno Bauer, old-time Berliner, colleague and arch-rival of Karl Marx, can be found here as well as references from Theodor Fontane’s eponymous novel that turns the cemetery into the setting of a fin-de-siècle relationship story. The music performance vocalizes the web of imaginations circling this place. Added to the historical chorus and bridging the gap to present times the sound installation highlights the voice of Herr Damerau, the last stone mason who runs his business on site.

The graveyard, unique yet almost forgotten, regains its dignity by becoming audible. In its dual role as event location and objective of an aesthetic research journey three artists trace the numerous transformations of a real place into fragments of fantasy. Resulting in aesthetic confusion the imponderables of history and perception are qualified as working methods for a performative piece of music. In an attempt to reanimate the present through art the cemetery becomes alive once more as a final resting place in a vibrant urban environment.

The project preludes a series of music performances about memory and remembrance conceptualized by Natalia Pschenitschnikova and Alexey Kokhanov. During its first section it is supported by sound artist Torsten Ottersberg.

The event is thankfully supported by initiative neue musik berlin e.V. and takes place dur­ing Monat der zeitgenössischen Musik.
