The proximity inherent in urban living often awakens our detective curiosity about what banal event may have caused a certain puzzling noise from the neighboring apartment. Unfortunately, the mysterious origins of the sound behind the wall are mostly hidden from us and, moreover, we ourselves are not only the audience in this collective soundscape, but also performers at the same time: the comfortable leaning against the wall makes its scraping sound, the washing machine rumbles, the radiator hisses, chairs are moved, the shower water splashes through the drain and down the pipes ... the resonating walls of the apartment reveal a true closeness, even when they suggest a separation.

Daniela Fromberg & Stefan Roigk trace this invasion of noises in their sound installation “Beyond the Wall” and construct large listening booths out of boxes and corrugated cardboard for the audience to sit in. Using instruments made of everyday materials such as combs, leaves, velcro, spinning tops, plastic forks or wool yarn, as well as by applying textured surfaces, they elicit a surprising wealth of sound from the resonating bodies. The audience is bathed in sound: immersed in the rustling of rough wool yarn pulled through the ripples in the corrugated cardboard, or a heavy wooden ball that rolls from side to side over the corrugated surface with a thunderous rumble. The cardboard booths for 1-2 people offer an immersive listening experience with an unusually large amount of privacy during the performance.

In the exhibition, the public can enter these structures, where the composition will be transmitted through multi-channel playback using sound transducers. They can move freely in the room or remain in the booths for intensive listening. The composition can be experienced live on two concert evenings and on four mornings in an educational program for daycare groups and families. At the concerts, the piece will be performed with the noise-producing materials directly on the cardboard boxes and supplemented by recordings. An artist talk is planned for the afternoon before the finissage.

Since 2010, Daniela Fromberg & Stefan Roigk have been collaborating on intermedia installations and compositions that use artefacts from their everyday surroundings. Their artistic work also includes sculpture, musical graphics, performance and photography. They are the founder of geräusch[mu’si: k], an award-winning education program for sound art.

An zwei Abenden performen die Künstler*innen die Komposition live mit Geräuschgebern und zusätzlichen Einspielungen direkt auf der Kartonskulptur. Es können jeweils sechs Kabinen für je 1-2 Personen gebucht werden. Weitere Sitzplätze sind geplant.
