ASSURANCE
(R: Juba, Germany/Nigeria 2020, 35 min.)

Her curiosity as a British-Nigerian DJ for new perspectives in the gender debate led Juba to Lagos as a film director, where she came into contact with three female DJs: Sensei Lo, DJ Yin and DJ Ayizan. Immersing herself in the lives of the three women enabled her to explore the effects of these social expectations and judgements in greater depth. ASSURANCE shows the obstacles that female DJs face on and off the dance floor, but also illustrates their courage and resistance to demand the self-evident right to their own musical careers.

20.15h, Talk
Juba and Noraa in conversation with Pamela Owusu-Brenyah

Three black women in the music industry: a DJ, a singer and a music consultant. They talk about their personal and professional experiences. A multi-perspective conversation which gives insight into the importance of their African roots for their work, why positive racism benefits them in part in the music business and what stereotypes they encounter as black women again and again.

21.00h, Concert
Noraa

Noraa, living in Paris, released her RnB & Soul-Pop debut album "Mixed Feelings" in August 2019. Born in Cologne, Germany, the artist grew up together with her German mother and her Chad-born father. As a child she listened to a lot of music and sounds from Somalia and Ethiopia, which her father accompanied on the guitar. Later she worked as a background singer for Flo Mega and Patrice. Soon after that she stood on big stages like the "Summerjam" or the "Bundesvision Song Contest". Together with her two sisters, she founded the DJ collective Tchari-Squad, with which she has since been rocking the dance floors with a mix of Afrobeats and Dancehall.

Pamela Owusu-Brenyah

Pamela Owusu-Brenyah campaigns for the visibility of contemporary Afro-pop culture in Germany. The Berlin-based music consultant, festival organizer and DJ works as A&R at AFROFORCE1 Records, Universal Music Task Force for the African music market. With her community platform and her festival AFRO x POP she wants to give talented artists* of the afro-german scene a stage.

About Female To Empower

Female composers, DJs and producers have always been part of the musical present. However, in the great, male-dominated narratives of music history they are still hardly mentioned today. The concert and film series Female to Empower therefore wants to tell the barely heard small and big stories of music from an exclusively female perspective.

To this end, Female to Empower combines music documentaries with live concerts and talks not only in order to provide a historical-documentary retrospective, but also to take a contemporary look at the musical work of women* in popular music.
