Harmonic Space 2020: James Tenney

5 Nights at KM28

Berlin’s newly formed ensemble Harmonic Space Orchestra presents a festival celebrating the ground-breaking experimental music of Canadian/American composer James Tenney (1932-2006), bringing together one of the largest European retrospectives of his work presented to date. The program features major works in alternate tuning systems (For Ann (rising) in a first-ever live multichannel version, Harmonium #7, ‘Scend for Scelsi, the complete Postal Pieces, Quintext, Bridge, Glissade) alongside smaller pieces. The festival also highlights Berlin-based composers who worked with or were inspired by Tenney: Catherine Lamb, Marc Sabat, Wolfgang von Schweinitz and Chiyoko Szlavnics. Guests include the duo Frank Reinecke+Helge Slaato (Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik) with their first complete live rendering of Schweinitz’ monumental “Plainsound Glissando Modulation” and vocalist Stine Janvin Motland featured as soloist in Catherine Lamb’s “Parallaxis Forma”. The program also includes new works in microtonally extended just intonation by Berlin’s youngest generation of composers as well as multimedia artwork and live electronics.
