Smith Janet is the latest incarnation of Chris Newman's chamber-punk band Janet Smith from 1980s Cologne. Now backed by two guitar virtuosos, Seth Josel and Peter Meyer, Newman sings Janet Smith's underground hits, including "My Wife Is French," "Mushrooms on Toast," and "Very Embarrassing Situation," as well as two movements from his new Kreuzberg Cycle (world premiere).

CHRIS NEWMAN is an experimental interdisciplinary artist using the mediums of music, painting, video, drawing and literature. He studied music at King’s College London and with Mauricio Kagel at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. He founded chamber-punk rock band Janet Smith in 1983.

He started to paint in 1989, having his first painting exhibition in 1990 with Galerie Poller, Frankfurt a.M., which led (from 1994) to his two-medium installations. His paintings, drawings, and installations have been presented at the Diözesan Museum (Cologne), Neue Museum (Nuremberg), Neues Museum Weserburg (Bremen), and Hamburger Bahnhof (Berlin).

Since the 1980s, Newman's music (including songs, piano pieces, and two piano concertos) has been performed at concerts and festivals, recorded for radio productions, and commissioned by orchestras including the BBC and Hessischer Rundfunk. He has published books of poetry and prose and issued a number of CDs, his latest one 'Piano Sonatas' with Mode Records.

SETH JOSEL is one of the leading instrumental pioneers of his generation, performing worldwise both as soloist and guest with leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Staatskappelle Berlin, and appearing at major European festivals including the Salzburg Festspiele, Donaueschingen, Holland Festival, Munich Biennale, and London's South Bank Festival.

As ensemble player and soloist Seth Josel has been involved in the first performances of more than 100 works. He has collaborated and consulted closely with Louis Andriessen, Gavin Bryars, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Tristan Murail, James Tenney, and many leading contemporary composers, including Peter Ablinger, Richard Barrett, Chaya Czernowin, Sarah Nemtsov, and Keeril Makan, all of whom have written works for him.

Josel co-authored "The Techniques of Guitar Playing," published by Baerenreiter Press. His reconstruction of the "lost" work for solo electric guitar by Morton Feldman was published by Edition Peters. In 2016, he was named Research Fellow at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent. He is recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including a Fulbright-Hays grant and a stipend from the Akademie Schloß Solitude.

PETER MEYER is a guitarist and composer. By melting all influences of jazz improvisation, experimental sounds, prog, indy rock, eletronic and Neue Musik together, he has created a unique and unheard of style, making him a remarkable voice of a new generation of jazz musicians. According to Sound and Image, "There is probably no comparable guitarist in Germany who is as versatile and creative as Peter Meyer." He has been nominated twice for the Echo Jazz Awards, in 2015 and 2017. His current projects include Melt Trio (with Bernhard Meyer and Moritz Baumgärtner ) and Other Animal (with Bernhard Meyer, Wanja Slavin, and Jim Black).
