nach Allen Ginsberg

Almost immediately after it was released, HOWL was banned for being obscene and pornographic. After a high-profile trial, however, freedom of art prevailed and HOWL became the manifesto of the Beat Generation. At around the same time, photographer Robert Frank’s book The Americans was published. Both looked beneath the surface of American life, painting a portrait of a prude people plagued by racism and consumerism. But on the edges, new kinds of beauty were beginning to appear. “We were united by a quasi-religious feeling for the sacramental character of every single moment; this enlightened understanding that every moment in life counts, even when it appears to be banal.” (A. Ginsberg)
