Hearing / Discussing / Understanding Braxton: Listening Session

Jazzfest Berlin

Can you hear it? Anthony Braxton’s creative music and his compositional thought are rooted in a multilayered and idiosyncratic philosophy of music and society. This begs the question of which ideas and concepts are brought to bear on his music and to what extent these can be traced in listening to his music. Braxton relies on alert, benevolent musicians and listeners who are prepared to make new experiences, his “friendly experiencers”. This listening session is an attempt to open up a differentiated perception of Braxton’s music and its guiding principles and to give an insight into the connections between composition, performance and theory within the creative process. There will be a focus on work complexes from the last decades that are less well-known in these parts, like “Ghost Trance Music”, “ZIM Music”, “Sonic Genome” and the “Trillium”-operas. Ingrid Laubrock and Chris Jonas, both of them long-term musical companions of Braxton, will interpret both audio examples and basic elements of his work. The listening session will be introduced and moderated by Timo Hoyer, an expert on Anthony Braxton.
