Thomas Nicholson | Kalman & Rasten

Thomas Nicholson, CONE (2019), for one loudspeaker, and ATLAS, 2012 (2015), performed by Nicholson (violin) and Rasten (electric guitar)

Egil Kalman (modular synthesizer) & Fredrik Rasten (acoustic and electric guitar, voice)

KM28 kicks off its fall 2019 season with EGIL KALMAN & FREDRIK RASTEN's duo for guitar and modular synthesizer. Kalman and Rasten explore long-lasting and slowly developing chords and justly tuned harmonic relationships. The warm and "endless" sounds of Kalman’s modular synthesizer combined with Rasten’s guitars and subtle vocal shadings create a space where acoustic and electric sounds merge and fulfill each other. Their upcoming debut record "Weaving a Fabric of Winds" will be released in November on the Portugese label Shhpuma.

Composer THOMAS NICHOLSON presents the world premiere of CONE (2019) for one loudspeaker, in 3,5,7,13,19-space just intonation, and the Berlin premiere of ATLAS, 2012 (2015) for electric guitar and violin.

Driven by (artistic) practices from many times and fields ranging from cosmology to painting to interdisciplinary experiments, Nicholson's compositions since 2014 have focused on the fragile interaction between counterpoint and the distinctive harmonic "fusing" evoked through microtonal just intonation ("pure tuning").

His recent awards and honours include first prizes from the SOCAN Foundation for compositions MOTTE and ABOUT (2017) as well as SOCAN’s John Weinzweig Grand Prize (2017), the DAAD Prize from the Berlin University of the Arts (2018), and a feature in CBC Music’s ‘30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30’ (2018).
