Only a few are granted to reach and experience what Gunter Hampel has achieved: he is appreciated on the old as well as on the new continent, undisputedly recognized, famous.
Kühlspot Social Club welcomes a living legend and a giant of German jazz history.
Cosmopolitan and multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel plays saxophone, flute, bass clarinet, vibraphone and piano. For Hampel, jazz is a mouthpiece of his innermost being - always different, obstinate, modern and avant-garde. In the course of the now more than 70 years that Hampel has enriched the stages and studios of this world with his music, he has played with the titans of 20th century music such as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and John Cage, and has been instrumental in the development of both European and American free jazz. He has also been leading children's workshops for the young jazz musicians of tomorrow and beyond. In 2009 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. http://gunterhampelmusic.de/
Johannes Schleiermacher comes from a musical family; his uncle is the composer Stefan Schleiermacher. Since the days of his studies at the Berlin University of Music, Schleiermacher has been able to make a name for himself as an accomplished musician who knows no genre conventions and is boundless in his creativity and expressiveness. Whether with Gnawa musicians from Morocco, West African rhythms, or the musical avant-garde; Schleiermacher is simply at home in music. http://wordpress.johannes-schleiermacher.de/
Cavana Hazelton as the daughter of Gunter Hampel and Jeanne Lee, she accompanied her parents on their tours and learned the importance of intercultural communication and the importance of co-creation. On the one hand she works as a freelance singer, speaker and vocal coach, on the other hand as a consultant and coach for cultural competence. She works with modern musicians like Carlos Nino and Surya Botofasina. http://cavanahazelton.com/vocal-arts/
Bernd Oezsevim studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and has been touring with Gunter Hampel since he was 22 years old. In the course of his career he has played with German and international greats such as Perry Robinson, Florian Weber, Randy Brecker, Uri Caine and Rudresh Mahanthappa. Since 2010 he lives and works in Berlin.
The Dancers:
Dance is the chosen visual medium that Hampel has chosen for his compositions for the stage and the audience since the 1970s. The dancers are an important part of the Music and Dance Improvisation Company (MDIC).
Magdalena Dzeco: Dzeco began dancing with the MDIC at the very beginning of her artistic career, for the first time in 2011. Hampel was immediately a fan of her improvisational talent. She received her Bachelor of Dance in 2019 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main and her Master of Arts at the Humboldt University in Berlin. The Frankfurt-based dancer works with artists from various disciplines and became a mother last year. https://www.magdadzeco.com/
Qadira Oechsele Ali: Since 2016 Ali has endowed MDIC with her mastery of movement. Qadira studied classical and contemporary dance at the HfMDK Frankfurt am Main. She works as a freelance dancer, choreographer and movement coach and has been supporting the “ZUKUNFT TANZT” festival as a jury member since 2020. https://www.creative-city-berlin.de/de/network/member/qadiraoechsleali/
Ruomi Lee-Hampel: The son of Hampel and Lee has been teaching his improvised movements in the MDIC since 2013. With his sister on stage, you can't deny: it's a family affair! The trained filmmaker, set and landscape designer learned to dance in the New York jazz scene under artists such as Christina Jones and Patricia Nichols Parker. Knowing Hampel's artistry since birth, it's a lot of fun to see Ruomi's interpretations of music in motion.
