Morphologies is a project which has commissioned four new works for a single vocal performer piano (without pianist) and electronic, asking the vocal performer (countertenor Rupert Enticknap) to engage his whole body and voice with an instrument that becomes a sculptural object. It invites each composer (Wojtek Blecharz, Dominykas Digimas, Liisa Hirsch and Lucie Vítková) to explore different forms and processes of change between musical and performative qualities present in the classic combination of voice and piano. Approaching more from the perspective of Pierre Schaefer’s research into ‘sound objects’ rather than song, this project looks to remove the performative and musical hierarchy created in the classic combination of singer/voice and piano accompaniment in Lied-duo or art song performance. The use of microphones and amplification is treated as a third instrument creating a ‘zoom in’ to both otherwise lost sonorities (voice and piano) and a more private way of making music. By making the voice ‘self accompanied’ it aims to make it an equal element amongst other sounds but also give the body of the performer agency. Further, in a posthuman context, this questions not only how we see bodies and our relationships with the objects which surround us, but also notions of classical virtuosity.
