the alien kin

music for microphones and selfmade wind instruments

The Alien Kin is an multidisciplinary project which connects new musical performance, sound ecology, and environmental studies. It is based on an appreciation of bird-insect ecosystems in Berlin, finding ways to imagine a musicking that responds to and relates to our non-human neighbours. The Alien Kin uses self-made flutes, bird calls and bird whistles to explore unconventional timbres and intonations. It reflects on the pulsations that dictate our daily lives –from clocks and mechanical gears to the tick of a metronome– and seeks to expand into more complex, asymmetrical, and organic rhythms based on (nonhuman) gestures like grinding, rubbing, banging, oscillating, and vibrating.
