The Sonar Quartet creates self-compositions that explore collective improvisation, reproducible but still flexible within each performance.
For the Berlin-based musicians, these works have become a direct form of expression developed over years of collaboration to develop a communicative form of notation to define and build upon their collective sound. This unique creative process has unlocked access to rich and unusual sound worlds. During the pandemic, this form of expression gained new importance for the ensemble, as these works could be presented in both recordings and live concerts.
In Autumn 2021, these works could be recorded in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk, were released as a CD at Are Verlag on August 26th, 2022, and will be presented in this release concert.
Thus, concerts serve as mirror and reference point for the pieces to become alive, concerts have remained a fundamental part of the group’s creative process.
The Sonar Quartet has invited the experimental producer/musician Ziúr as a guest at the Musikbrauerei. Ziúr is a fixture in Berlin's rich musical topography. She produces music that is expansive, rich and diverse in texture, with sounds which are simultaneously machinistic and deeply anthropomorphic, toying with mechanical isolation and the chaotic spectrum of human emotion. Unlike a soundtrack or score, there is no film to which one can turn to narrativize the music ... there are only evocative sounds reaching from each song towards the cybernetic.
Very much hitting her creative stride, in 2021, she has so far already released her third album, Antifate, and two EPs: Blur, and Now Now to critical acclaim.
