eine Studie zum Phänomen der Stimme

The duo Minton-Beyer resembles a study on the phenomenon of the voice with two different instruments: the human voice and the daxophone.

Perhaps the most famous and notorious vocal artist of free improvisation, Phil Minton, is known for his remarkable extended vocal techniques that encompass the entire spectrum of humanly possible expression: from simple breathing, to murmuring, grumbling and whispering, to whistling, burping and rasping, screaming and moaning – from shrill highs to rumbling lows, everything is at the ready. And all this is always paired with an extraordinary, unique presence and an absolutely unfiltered expression.

On the daxophone, on the other hand, the imitation of sounds and speech patterns, both human and animal, seems to have been built into the nature and character of the instrument. Compared to other instruments, it seems to be very easy to imitate animal sounds and voices on the daxophone, from birdsong and cackling, croaking, cooing, chirping, chattering, quacking and hissing to grunting, growling, roaring and howling of various animal species. All this has been well researched and practically tested by Kriton Beyer in cross-species communication with his daxophone as an instrument and is also audibly processed in the musical dialogue of this duo.

Acoustically, the sound of this duo is simple, clear, unambiguous and direct, despite the velocity, the changeability and the abundance of musical information, and is thus very intimate and never fake or forced. The two voices complement each other on an equal footing, without one ever obscuring the other; they move somewhere between the animalistic and the human, sometimes comical and grotesque, sometimes subtle and fragile, in an intuitive musical exchange between two multifaceted voices of different nature.
