Quoting John Carter

@Jazz am Kaisersteg

The project deals with the music of the afro-american clarinet/saxophone player and composer John Carter.
2021 I received an "Arbeits- und Recherche-Stipendium" from the senate of Berlin to dig deeper into the music of a musician that i did not know so much about, but was definitely interested in. I have been listening to his music for a while and was astounded not only by his incredibly versatile, expressive and virtuoso clarinet playing, but also by his fine compositional work and curious to know more about this outstanding musician. So I talked and wrote to some musicians who knew him, like clarinet player Theo Jörgensmann, reed player Ab Baars and last but not least reed player Marty Ehrlich. I transcribed many compositions and got -thanks to Marty Ehrlich- an original manuscript of Carter's composition Castles of Ghana.
In the end I was able to organise an evening filling programme with his and my compositions, that reflect on his music. At the same time I allowed myself to transform Carters music by assigning the bass part to the piano and remaining bass-less. That gave us the chance to move away from a hard swinging free jazz concept to a more mood based, improvised and rhythmically open setting with no groove at all, or differently conctructed ones. That's why I called the project Quoting John Carter: aside from honouring a master player and interesting composer, we do our own thing.

Uli Kempendorff, Tenorsaxophon, Bassklarinette, Flöte
Gerhard Gschlössl, Posaune
Rieko Okuda, Keyboards
