MONAT DER ZEITGENÖSSISCHEN MUSIK #8
Month of Contemporary Music #8
Four weeks of New Music, Sound Art, Music Theatre, Echtzeitmusik, Improvisation and Discourse
31 August–30 September 2024
The Month of Contemporary Music is the umbrella festival of the contemporary music scene in Berlin. Together, its organisers present over 120 concerts, installations and performances with current works and a wide variety of artistic perspectives on around 50 stages over the course of a month. This high density offers both new audiences the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the multifaceted contemporary music scene and connoisseurs to gain an overview of current developments in music.
The eigth edition of the Month of Contemporary Music will open on 31 August with the festival "Intersecting Encounters" at the Kühlhaus, which is dedicated to the interfaces between composition, collective creation and improvisation. The Dell-Lillinger-Westergaard Trio, vocal artist Sofia Jernberg, the Sonar Quartet, pianist Tamara Stefanovich, the Catch Trio and members of the Zafraan Ensemble will come together for the event. The evening will also provide the opportunity to socialise over snacks and drinks.
The rest of the Month of Contemporary Music programme includes contemporary vocal and chamber music as well as improvised and Echtzeitmusik ("real-time music"), music theatre and sound art and everything in between. Current works can be discovered in concerts, performances and sound installations, with artists providing insights into their creative processes in discussion rounds.
In addition to established ensembles from Berlin such as ensemble mosaik, KNM Berlin, Maulwerker, Ensemble Adapter, Reanimation Orchestra, LUX:NM and Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the festival will host a number of national and international formations such as Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Resonanz, Trio Catch, Ensembles Phace from Vienna, Cantando Admont, the English vocal ensemble EXAUDI or WhatWhy Art from Korea.
The vibrancy of Berlin’s contemporary music scene can be attributed to its decentralized nature, leading to things happening nearly anywhere and at any time. And so it can be experienced throughout the month in concert halls (Philharmonie, Konzerthaus, Pierre Boulez Saal), at independent venues (e.g. KM28, Morphine Raum, Kotti-Shop, ausland) and in public spaces (e.g. Tiergarten).
We hope to see you there!
