The installation “The Weight Of Time” leads us into a labyrinth of wind gongs. The round, thin brass discs of various sizes come from an old bell foundry based in Wuhan, not far from the notorious wildlife market where the coronavirus originated. They respond to acoustic phenomena. The 200 kilos of brass in total form a resonant space that transcends the architectural space.
“The music itself takes centre stage. It is a work about listening. We hear the space. Every sound is given wings. The vitality of the metal becomes tangible.” (Moritz Gagern)
The effect is reminiscent of reverb panels used in recording studios before the advent of double-track tape and reverb units. Suspended in a dense array, the installation emphasizes the open resonant behaviour of the wind gongs.
The installation ‘The Weight of Time’ is open to the public. Over two weekends, it serves as a starting point for improvised interventions. Theo Nabicht and Damir Bacikin previously took part in the world premiere of Moritz Gagern’s “Concerto for 50 Wind Gongs and Mixed Ensemble”; now they are bringing their own material into dialogue with the installation.
