Lorenzo Romano (film and lecture)

In »Edible Music« (2021-2022), a chef prepares a complete meal, and thereby simultaneously produces the primary musical material for the composition. Every step necessary for the preparation of the meal then forms the musical structure of the entire piece. The chef thus essentially becomes a solo musician who leads a dialogue with an instrumental ensemble. This dialogue is comprised of the transformation of melodic fragments into background noise, and vice versa. »Edible Music« is a collaborative project between the composer Lorenzo Romano and the dancer and performer Michael J. Munoz. Building on their extensive collaboration in the world of the theater, both artists explore a new form of performance art that connects instrumental and electronic music, film, and culinary art.

»Edible Music« exists in two versions: one as an experimental short film, which has already been shown and won prizes at various film festivals, and can be viewed on this evening, and a second version as a multimedia piece of music, designed for video, soprano, ensemble, and electronics. Romano will speak about the dual nature of the piece and highlight the shifting roles between composer and director, as well was between actor and musician.
