Buganda Royal Music Revival (Nyege Nyege Tapes, LP/digital)

The Nyege Nyege Tapes label is internationally known for advanced club music from Uganda and the wider East African region, but with »Buganda Royal Music Revival« they venture a look at a centuries-old tradition. The 17 pieces are made up of recordings of court music from the kingdom of Bunganda, placing historical recordings from the 1940s to the 1960s next to contemporary ones. From the sound quality, you can guess which of the pieces are already a few years old, but that doesn't change their impact. Between vocal-dominated passages and short, explosive bursts of drumming, this compilation offers a broad panorama of the different musical approaches that have developed out of a single tradition. It is not presented according to strict ethnographic principles, but made tangible as a living practice.
