Anushka Chkheidze, Eto Gelashvili, Hayk Karoyi, Lillevan, Robert Lippok – Glacier Music II (Establishment, Buch+CD/digital)

»Glacier Music II« is nothing less than a mammoth project initiated by the Goethe-Institut Georgia and bringing together musicians from Georgia, Armenia and Germany. The title already says where exactly: Anushka Chkheidze, Eto Gelashvili, Hayk Karoyi, Lillevan and Robert Lippok found themselves in the Great Caucasus, collected impressions there and brought them back to the studio. Since their first meeting in 2013, they have presented the results in the context of an exhibition as well as at a number of live concerts. The album, accompanied by many pictures, lyrics, texts by the artists and an essay by Establishment founder Peter Kirn, comes after the hottest July since weather records began and now sounds like an even more urgent statement it could have in previous years. In various constellations, the participants deal with the nature and culture of the Caucasus region on the basis of field recordings, but also occasionally with the means of a chamber orchestra and structures from pop and folk traditions. However, they also manage to create an emotional connection to the climate crisis: The urgency of these ten sometimes very different pieces makes audible the imminent threat to which the musically described glaciers are exposed.
