Jennifer Lucy Allan – The Foghorn’s Lament: The Disappearing Music of the Coast (White Rabbit, book)

The journalist and radio presenter Jennifer Lucy Allan wrote her doctoral thesis as a musicologist on foghorns and now, building on that, she retells the history of the instrument—and at the same time her own—in The Foghorn's Lament: The Disappearing Music of the Coast. Her rather essayistic approach allows her to interweave her personal relationship to the sound of the foghorns with what she is writing about. That which began with Oren Ambarchi's album Audience of One—a slip of the ear, Allan admits: that record actually features a French horn—eventually took her around the world, from coast to coast. She lets her audience take part in this journey and thus manages to make her »obsession« with the instrument, which was invented in the mid-19th century and is now close to being retired for good, not only tangible but also comprehensible. A more beautiful lament has rarely been sung.
