Tomasz Sroczyński – Symphony n°2 / Highlander (Ici d’Ailleurs, LP/CD/digital)

There is a certain contradiction in improvising on the basis of loops. Tomasz Sroczyński, however, proves with Symphony n°2 / Highlander how productive the friction between repetition and difference can really be. As is to be expected from someone who cites Arvo Pärt on the one hand and techno on the other as his main sources of inspiration, the Polish improv-composer's pieces, based on recordings of string instruments, take their cues just as much from a certain pathos as they do from a very idiosyncratic interpretation of minimalism. Which happens to be only another contradiction that Sroczyński resolves with aplomb.
