The jazzweek
Mon, August 10 – Sun, August 16, 2020
Seven days of jazz, improvised music, and discourse: in art studios, clubs, bars, and many other places. Indoors, outdoors, and digital. Jazzwoche Berlin #2 is not a festival, it is a campaign highlighting Berlins' jazz and improv scene, showing that it was not dormant even under the current circumstances.
The scene is only awakening from the lock-down: Musicians are developing new forms of presentation and the ever-expanding concert schedule proves how much musicians want to get back on stage. Promoters and clubs have to come up with health and safety regulations, admitting rather small numbers of people to enjoy live music.
The new normal, which will stay both new and normal for a while, is the reason why Jazzwoche Berlin #2 will partly happen online: for a small entrance fee many the concerts will be viewable online at www.jazzwoche.berlin.
Jazzwoche Berlin #2 is not just about listening to music, it is also for talking about it; about its conditions and circumstances; about gender issues; about the pandemic’s ramifications on cultural policy; about the opportunities that a center for jazz and improvised music would bring. In a series of podcasts, “jazz.leben — Stimmen aus der Szene“, people from the scene will talk to each other about currently relevant subjects.
Some panels and talks will be held in English, some in German. All of them are free and digitally accessible.
During Jazzwoche Berlin #2, the fourth annual Berliner Jazzpreis will be awarded at Haus des Rundfunks on Thursday, 13 August, 2020. Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb) and the Berlin state cultural senate will confer the award to saxophone player, Silke Eberhard, who has been a prominent protagonist of the Berlin jazz scene for many years.
www.jazzwoche.berlin will give you a full overview of the many goings-on during Jazzwoche Berlin #2.
