WITOLD is a new trio around Kalle Kalima (guitar) Uli Kempendorff (tenor sax / baritone sax) and Moritz Baumgärtner (drums). Due to Corona restrictions, Kalle and Uli will play as a duo without Moritz.

Kalle brought an arrangement for guitar for Witold Lutoslawski's "Melodie Ludowe" (Folk Melodies) to a session in summer 2019. Lutoslawski, one of the greatest European composers of the 20th century, wrote these songs shortly after World War II as "functional music" to support his family.

The mixture of naive melodies, crooked folky forms and Lutoslawski's partly beautiful, partly cryptic and dense harmonies, supplies wonderful source material for improvisations and conversations of the trio (duo) with an invisible fourth man, somewhere between Jimmy Giuffres and Tim Berne.

On the 14th of August they will present a special set of compositions from Lutosławski’s “Melodie Ludowe” exclusively for the Into The Shed Exclusives.
