The Phonetic Orchestra and Ensemble was created in Melbourne, Australia in 2012 as a vehicle to explore the relationship between notation and sound. The unique ensemble brings together musicians from such diverse backgrounds as Contemporary Classical music, Electro-acoustic music and Experimental improvisation to create work that embraces site-specificity, extreme durational performances and the fluid borders between composition and improvisation, and the individual and the collective.
The overnight sleep-concert medium allows for an experience that differs widely from a regular concert format. The audience has the opportunity to come and go as they please, and the opportunity to stay for the full 8 hours also offers a very rare concert experience, which aims to explore the roles that time, space, perception and (sub)consciousness play in the shaping of human understanding.
